Samurai Shodown II (known in Japan as Shin Samurai Spirits: Haohmaru Jigoku-hen, which loosely translates to 'True Samurai Spirits: Haohmaru's Portrait of Hell') is a 2D historical-fantasy weapon-based fighting game developed and released by SNK for arcades (powered by Neo Geo MVS hardware) and the Neo Geo AES on December 2, 1994. In contrast to other fighting games at the time which were set in modern times and focused primarily on hand-to-hand combat, Samurai Shodown is set in feudal-era Japan (similar to Kaneko's Shogun Warriors) and was one of the first fighting games to focus primarily on weapon-based combat after the success of Capcom's Street Fighter II.
